The Correspondence
To E.
Fort Thomas, Ky.
February 2, 1941

e ‐

I sold my ring. I had to. I have nothing here other than what I had on me driving to Ft Thomas. Took the streetcar across the river into the city and sold it ‐ $100 at a jeweler downtown. I probably looked desperate. And I was. It really killed me to do it, but I didn’t see any other way. I don’t have clothes, can’t eat. They’re letting me stay at Ft Thomas, at least ‐ some barracks-looking place. I’m not sure why.

$100? Can you believe that? But I guess it was fair. Gold is $35 an ounce. And what I bought with it was equally as cheap ‐ got what I needed and still have a little left to eat on, thank God. I walked out of a department store at the Carew Tower and the guy there was treating me like a hot shot based on how much I spent. You’ll laugh when you see the receipt (enclosed).

Anyway. The train ticket is for two days from now.

J
